GEORGIAN FOREIGN MINISTRY AGAIN ACCUSES RUSSIA OF VIOLATING CFE TREATY
The Georgian Foreign Ministry has issued a further statement rejecting
Russian Deputy Defense Minister Colonel General Nikolai Kormiltsev's
rebuttal of its 31 January statement accusing Russia of deploying armor
and weaponry in South Ossetia in excess of the amount to which it is
entitled under the Treaty on Conventional Forces in Europe (CFE),
Caucasus Press reported on 6 February (see "RFE/RL Newsline," 4 February
2003). The second statement claims that on 19 December 2002 Russia
deployed in South Ossetia's Djava Raion 19 T-55 and T-62 tanks and that
on 23 January Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE)
observers found a 122-millimeter howitzer at a new Russian post in the
village of Grubeda, 10 kilometers from Tskhinvali. LF
