*NGO the House of Encounters Takes Care of Elderly* 

The House of Encounters is a daughter organization of the
German-Georgian Friendship Circle, Tbilisi - Saarbruken.  Its goal is
to assist in the solution of problems facing elderly and has organized
services to satisfy the physical and social needs of elders. The House
is currently renting an apartment with a common living room and
private sleeping rooms where members of the NGO will provide constant
care to 4-5 elders. The elderly will also be able to participate in
cultural programs organized by the House of Encounters and receive
medical consultations on Fridays.  The organization also offers the
following to elderly at home: washing, cleaning, repairing windows and
other household items and food.

The House of Encounters organizes meetings, excursions, lectures in
art and architecture, concerts and other cultural events to address
the loneliness typical for people of this age.  The elderly can
express their artistic imagination through knitting, needlework,
making dolls, drawing classes, and singing in the choir.

*New NGO from Kutaisi Supports IDPs*

Registered in Kutaisi in 1998, the NGO Cultural Scientific Information
Association aims to facilitate the building and development of
democratic and civil society in Georgia through supporting the
intellectual and spiritual development of the population, raising the
social initiative of youth, protecting human rights in Georgia,
developing ecological and family tourism, and assisting vulnerable
populations.  In May 1998 the Association conducted a program to
provide psychological rehabilitation to displaced and vulnerable
persons through group and individual psychological consultations and
free medical service.  The program targeted 380 women and children
sheltered in the hotels Sataplia, Kutaisi, Tbilisi, and in the
dormitory of the Teachers Training Institute. In addition, the
Association bought and distributed 1500 pillboxes of vitamins to
pregnant women and feeding mothers. 

Cultural Scientific Information Association plans to publish
educational brochures, create groups that will assist displaced and
vulnerable population, and popularize problems of disabled among the
population. At present, the Association is trying to identify a
potential donor for the project entitled "Breast Feeding for Displaced
and Vulnerable Babies in Emergency Situations."

*NGO Human Resource Development Foundation Works with IDP Children*

From September 1, with financial support of Norwegian Refugee Council
Human Resource Development Foundation resumed its project
"Psycho-Social Rehabilitation of IDPs."  The project aims to carry out
activities with children, teenagers and grownups in Tbilisi, Zugdidi,
and Tskinvali. The project has been financed for one year.

HORIZONTI FOUNDATION ANNOUNCEMENTS

*The Horizonti Foundation Announces Two Small Grants Rounds*

On September 7, 1998 Horizonti, The Foundation for the Third Sector,
announces a new small grants round for Georgia's NGOs for projects
focused on solving social and environment problems of their
communities. Two separate competitions will be held: one for NGOs from
Tbilisi and one for NGOs from Georgia's regions. For both
competitions, Horizonti Foundation will accept projects with budgets
not exceeding 3.000 USD. The deadline for proposals is 18:00 on
October 30, 1998.  Those interested in application materials and more

*The Virtual Foundation Announces Grants Program for Georgia's NGOs*

The Horizonti Foundation is implementing the Virtual Foundation
Program aiming to raise funds from local sources for small-scale
projects through the Internet.

All NGOs working in the field of environmental protection, health
care, and community development problems as defined by their charters
are eligible to participate in the program.

The organizations wanting to participate in this program should submit
their projects  (in an electronic format in Georgian and in English)
to Horizonti Foundation Grants Program.  Beginning on September 7,
proposals will be accepted on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays (from
16:00 to 18:00).  For further information please contact Horizonti

*The Horizonti Foundation Organizes the Informational Meeting About
Virtual Foundation Grants*

On September 17 at 16:00 in its office Horizonti will organize an
informational-consultation meeting for organizations wanting to
participate in the Virtual Foundation Grants Competition.  The
interested organizations are invited to attend the meeting where they
will have an opportunity to ask questions and clarify conditions and
main directions of the competition in more detail.

*The Horizonti Foundation Organizes a Meeting for Educational NGOs*

On September 11 in its office at 16:00, The Horizonti Foundation
Information Program will host an information exchange meeting for
educational NGOs. The aim of the meeting is to brainstorm and reveal
educational issues that could be solved with mass media involvement.
This meeting will be followed by another meeting, which will give
educational NGOs and journalists the chance to discuss these issues.

All NGOs that work in the field of education, or that include
education of one of their fields of activities, are invited to
participate in the meeting. Those interested in participation should
contact Manana Dumbadze at the Horizonti Information Program prior the

*The Horizonti Foundation Continues to Accept Applications for a
Trainer's  Position*

Please, note that the Horizonti Foundation prolonged the deadline for
submitting applications for a position of a Trainer in Training and
Consulting Program. Requirements: · Work experience as a trainer on
organizational development issues and /or certificate in
Organizational Management · Excellent Georgian, Russian, and English
language skills (both written and oral) · Experience with computer
programs (Word, Excel, E-mail, Internet) The applicants should submit
the following documents: 1. Detailed resume; 2. Letter of interest
(one page); 3. Letter of reference; 4. Copy of a Certificate (if
applicable). The applications will be accepted every working day from

NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR NGOs

*Travel Grants for Georgia-U.S. Industrial R&D Collaborations*

The U.S Civilian Research and Development Foundation (CRDF) announces
a new, competitive Travel Grants for Georgia-U.S. Industrial R&D
Collaborations Program. With a total value of $50,000, this program
will provide Georgian scientists and engineers with short-term travel
support to the United States to meet with representatives of leading
U.S. science-related industries to discuss potential collaboration in
R&D areas of mutual interest.  The deadline for applications for this
program is December 31, 1998.

Two types of awards will be made Group Travel Grants and Individual
Travel Grants.

*Georgian, Russian and Ukrainian NGO Representatives Invited to NGO
Development Workshop in Istanbul*

As part of the TACIS (the European Union programme of assistance to
the former Soviet states) funded project for the Black Sea, the Field
Studies Council (FSC) UK is organizing an NGO Development Workshop for
participants from Georgia, Russia, and Ukraine to be held at the Black
Sea Environmental Programme office in Istanbul, 19-22 October 1998.
The organizers will cover travel and accommodation of the workshop
participants.

The purpose of the workshop is to develop and practice key project
management skills in influential individuals who are working in NGOs
and who are committed to enhancing the role of NGOs in the
environmental improvement process of the TACIS Black Sea region.

The programme of the workshop will be highly interactive and will
cover the following subject areas: · Working with people: activities
to help build consensus in a group. · Public participation: what is it
and how does it happen? · Project management: project definition and
use of a logical framework, detailed planning and monitoring of a
project budget. · Writing project proposals and getting funds. ·
Effective communication: how people learn. 

Requirements for participants: 
· Want to participate in the workshop 
· Have an influential position in their NGO (to be able to use the
know-how) · Read English and be able to communicate in English · not
have participated in the FSC course before · Come from a coastal NGO
witha good track record of working in a community · Be an active
member of their NGO · Be willing to commit to implementing an action
to deliver a small scale public participation or awareness project
after the workshop · Undertake to provide feedback on the workshop
usefulness some period after the workshop has finished.

*An Online Dialogue on Women and Health Issues Invites Participants*

Starting on Monday, August 31, the United Nations Division for the
Advancement of Women is conducting an online conference/dialogue on
women and health issues. Interested individuals can join the
discussion from  August 31 to  September 21 and take part in the
global dialogue.  The dialogue can be followed up via the conference
web site at: www.un.org/womenwatch/daw/csw/wohealth.htm

The dialogue will focus on the following five topics: 

1.     ACCESS: Access to and quality of health services - Are all
women (for example women of different ages, ethnicities and income
groups) getting equal access to quality health care? 2. PROMOTION:
Health education and promotion - How do women learn about staying
healthy? About appropriate health care? 3. EDUCATION: Medical
education and research - Is there a male bias? What changes are
needed? 4. NURSING: Is nursing a neglected profession? 5. HEALTH
REFORM: Reform of the health sector - Is it happening and how? Who
benefits? Who loses?

*Ruth Strang Research Awards for Women and Girls Issues*

Supports research on any topic about the education, personal, and
professional development of women and girls. Two awards (value: $750)
