Kazakh president pledges work with other CAsian states to cut off drug
routes
Excerpts from report by Kazakh Khabar TV on 29th May
[Presenter] Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev is in Almaty now. He is
planning to leave for Ukraine for the celebrations of the 1,550th
anniversary of Dneprodzerzhinsk this week. Nursultan Nazarbayev visited the
new Philip Morris tobacco factory in Almaty Region.
[Passage omitted; addressing journalists, Nazarbayev called on young people
to lead healthy lives. He does not see any need for Russian air strike on
Afghanistan]
[Presenter] Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev also highly assessed the
operation uncovering the drug-trafficking route which was successfully
carried out by the Almaty city and Regional Department of the National
Security Committee [drugs were found in Tajik embassy car]. Nursultan
Nazarbayev said that such successful operations by special services will be
encouraged. Meanwhile, he called on the National Security Committee [NSC]
to cooperate with neighbouring states in fighting drug-traffickers.
[Nazarbayev, flanked by journalists] Our special agencies have done a very
good job which we will be encouraging in order to carry out such seizures.
This is a big achievement of the department of the NSC and this was not an
easy job. The work on the operation was carried out over a few months. They
[NSC officers] followed and studied them [the drug traffickers] and
detained them in time. We must not stop at this. We will be working jointly
with Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan in order to cut off the drug
trafficking routes through Kazakhstan.
