1. TENDER ON AIR-ROUTES HELD IN ASTANA.
Today, October 15, officials of Kazakh Ministry of Transportation and
Communication announced results of tender on air-routes usage held last and this
week in Astana. It was reported that 10 private air companies took part in the
competition. Such air companies as Air-Kazakhstan, Irtysh-Avia, Air-Astana,
SKAT, Eurasia-Air and Kokshetau-Air had won the tender reportedly. The major
international and internal air flights will be conducted by Air-Kazakhstan and
Air-Astana companies. Kenzhebek Zhanarbek of Kazakh Ministry of Transportation
and Communication says that gradually the number of air companies functioning in
the country might be reduced.
2. KAZAKH SENATE DISCUSSES POSSIBLE AMENDMENTS TO CRIMINAL PROCESSIONAL CODE.
Upper Chamber of Kazakh Parliament - Senate, discussed draft laws on amendments
to Kazakh Criminal Processional Code and some other laws on reforms in
Penitentiary system of the country, at its session today, October 15. It was
reported at the session that recent amendments introduced to some Chapters of
Kazakhstan's Criminal Code allowed to reduce number of jail inmates in the
country. Over 65 thousand persons have been released from jails and labor camps
in Kazakhstan this year. Current penitentiary system in Kazakhstan needs
drastic repair and reforms, said members of Senate. Discussions are expected to
continue.
3. ANTI-WAR COMMITTEE HOLDS GATHERING.
Leaders and activists of Kazakhstan's Antiwar Committee consisting of members of
Alash Party, Communist Party, Compatriots Party and Workers Movement, held
gathering at Almaty-based Democracy House today, October 15. The main issue
discussed at the session was about Kazakhstan's stance over US plans on
anti-Iraq operations. The gathered politicians demanded Prime Minister of
Kazakhstan - Imanghaliy Tasmaghambetov, to explain officially what Kazakhstan's
official attitude about anti-Iraq coalition was Vice Chairman of Compatriots
Party - Zhaqsybay Bazylbayev said that Premier Tasmaghambetov should speak up
openly through TV and other media outlets and answer all the questions
concerning the issue. According to Alash Party's Seittay Abenov, not Premier
Tasmaghambetov, but President Nursultan Nazarbayev should answer all the
questions through TV. Arsentiy Apolimov - a leader of Almaty Communists, said
that Washington's plans to set up its military base on Kazakh territory should
be considered as intervention into internal affairs of Kazakhstan. The majority
of the gathered politicians expressed their negative attitude toward plans on
anti-Iraq strikes and those about possible expansion of U.S. military presence
in Central Asia.
