Kyrgyz foreign debt payments substantially reduced

The Kyrgyz Republic's state foreign debt stood at 1,424m dollars on 1 May
2002. The country's internal debt is now 133.9m dollars. Thus, the total
state debt amounted to 1,558m dollars on 1 May 2002, the head of the
Finance Ministry directorate for state debt and assets, Birzhan Chukin, has
said in an interview with the newspaper Agym.
Chukin said that the payment of foreign debt instalments in 2002 should have
totalled 80m dollars, but, following a decision by the Paris Club, the sum
was reduced to 27m dollars. In 2003, the foreign debt was cut from 66m
dollars to 23.5m dollars. In 2004, it will amount to 20m dollars instead of
64m dollars. Over the three years from 2002 to 2004, a total of 71m dollars
will be paid instead of 210m dollars.
Chukin also identified the country's largest creditors. They are Japan (175m
dollars), Russia (166m dollars) and Turkey (43m dollars).
The World Bank is the largest creditor among the international
organizations. [Kyrgyzstan] owes the bank 401m dollars.
