1. CHAIRMAN-IN-OFFICE OF OSCE IN BISHKEK. President Askar Akayev
received in Bishkek on 8 July Portuguese Foreign Minister Antonio
Martins da Cruz, who is the current chairman in office of the
Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
According to the presidential press service, they discussed aspects
of cooperation between the OSCE and Kyrgyzstan as well as between
Portugal and Kyrgyzstan.
Foreign Minister Askar Aitmatov said during the meeting with the
OSCE delegation that the government settled the violent situation in
the southern regions with full respect of human rights, passing an
amnesty law to all those involved in the bloody events. Antonio da
Cruz met also with leaders of the opposition political parties,
representatives of non-governmental organizations and mass media
discussing current situation in the country.
2. EBRD DELEGATION IN KYRGYZSTAN. President Askar Akayev received in
Bishkek on 8 July a delegation of the European Bank for
Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) led by its vice president
Norin Doyle. They discussed aspects of cooperation between the bank
and Kyrgyzstan and increase of the bank activity in the country.
The delegation arrived in Bishkek on 7 July and Norin Doyle and
acting head of the Ineximbank of Kyrgyzstan Dmitry Bekbulatov signed
an agreement on launching a new program of micro credit and EBRD
plans giving $15.3 million for the program. Vice Prime Minister
Joomart Otorbaev attended the meeting. There are 11 investment
projects of EBRD in operation in Kyrgyzstan.
3. KAZAKH PRIME MINISTER TO VISIT BISHKEK. Prime Minister Imangali
Tasmagambetov of Kazakhstan plans visiting Kyrgyzstan on 9-10 July.
President Askar Akayev and Prime Minister Nikolai Tanaev would
receive them and discuss bilateral relations between the two states
and aspects of economical cooperation. According to the press
service for foreign ministry, an agreement on labor migrations, an
agreement on joint use of water recourses of the region as well as
buying production of a cement plant in Kyrgyzstan would be signed
during the visit.
4. FOREIGN ORGANIZATIONS SUPPORT SMALL BUSINESS IN KYRGYZSTAN. The
Kabar News Agency reported from Bishkek on 8 July that the three
international organizations, namely the US Agency for International
Development, the International Finance Corporation and the Swiss
agency for economical matters, decided to give Kyrgyzstan $5 million
to develop small and medium sized business. A special Central Asian
fund would be formed and it would make investment into local
enterprises up to $800,000.
5. A KYRGYZ PARLIAMENTARY GROUP IN EUROPE. According to the Kyrgyz
Committee for Human Rights, its Chairman Ramazan Dyryldaev and
deputies of Kyrgyz parliament Adaham Madumarov and Ismail Isakov are
in Germany now. They came to Europe on invitation of the
Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe and plan meeting
representatives of international organizations and German officials
discussing current situation in Kyrgzystan
6. PRESIDENT AKAYEV RECEIVES FOREIGN AMBASSADORS. President Askar
Akayev received in Bishkek on 8 July newly appointed Canadian
Ambassador Gector Cowan and Vatican Representative Josef Veselovsky
and they handed Akayev their credential papers. The same day, Akayev
received Israeli Ambassador Israel May-Ami, whose term is over and
he is leaving Kyrgyzstan. Bilateral relations between Kyrgyzstan and
Canada, Israel and Vatican were discussed during the meetings.
7. A KOREAN BUSINESSMAN KILLED IN BISHKEK. Body of 46-year-old South
Korean businessman Park Yong-bok was found dead in his apartment in
Bishkek on 7 July. Interior ministry spokesman Joldoshbek
Busurmankulov told RFE/RL correspondent on 8 July that Park Yong-bok
was shot to dead in the head by pistol but there was no evidence of
a robbery or struggle.
Head of the Korean Education Center in Bishkek Sim Stang Do told
RFE/RL correspondent that Park Yong-bok was president of the New
Oriantal Company and co-owner of the Santa Maria restaurant in
Bishkek and had worked in Kyrgyzstan for eight years. On 29 June,
Consul of the Chinese embassy in Bishkek Wang Jianping and his
driver Nurmuhamed Umar were shot to dead in Bishkek.
8. RUSSIAN REGIONAL DELEGATION TO KYRGYZSTAN. A delegation of the
Tomsk Oblast delegation of Russia led by acting governor of the
oblast Andrey Trubitsyn arrived in Bishkek on 8 July. Prime Minister
Nikolai Tanaev received them the same day discussing aspects of
economical cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and Tomsk.
9. FLOOD KILLS A FAMILY IN THE SOUTH. A house collapsed after a
heavy reigns in the southern Batken Province during the night from 7
to 8 July and killed a whole family. Resident of the Kara-Bulak
village Nazim Kadyrov, 41, his wife, his teenage son and six-year-
old daughter died.
10. US COMPANY TO ERECT A TV-SCREEN IN THE CENTER OF BISHKEK.
According to the AKI-Press Agency, the IPV News USA media company
plans erecting a large Toshiba TV screen in the center of Bishkek to
show its commercials. The company is shooting a video film on
tourism developments in Kyrgyzstan and is engaged in searching
ancient treasures on the bed of Lake Issyk-Kul.
