Over 200,000 ha affected by drought in Tajikistan

Text of report by the Tajik news agency Asia-Plus on 4th October

In the first nine months of the year Tajikistan suffered damage worth 7bn
[Tajik roubles, the rate is 2,050 roubles to one dollar] from natural
disasters, including floods, hurricanes, earthquakes and others, Asia-Plus
was told on 4th October at the department for protecting the population and
territories under the Ministry of Emergency Situations and Civil Defence.

Khatlon Region was most badly hit by various natural disasters, suffering
5bn rouble damage.

Leninobod [Soghd] Region lost 461.7m roubles, the central Districts - 833m
roubles and Mountainous Badakhshon Autonomous Region - 671m roubles.

Asia-Plus also learned about the damage caused by the drought this year.
According to the preliminary data, the figure exceeds 804bn roubles [as
received].

Over 217,000 ha of land were burnt by the destructive disaster in
Tajikistan. Khatlon Region was most severely affected by the drought -
106,000 ha of land dried out there and the damage amounted to 46bn roubles.
The drought quite seriously affected Leninobod Region too - 62,000 ha of
land were damaged (15bn rouble loss). The figures for the central Districts
and the Badakhshon Region are 45,000 ha (20bn roubles) and 3,000 ha (2.4bn
roubles) respectively.

These disappointing calculations has been made by the said department
together with the Ministry of Agriculture.
