IMF BACKS INTRODUCTION OF NEW TAJIK CURRENCY

DUSHANBE. Oct 26 (Interfax) - The board of directors of the
International Monetary Fund on Wednesday came out in support of Tajik
President Emomali Rakhmonov's decision to introduce a new national
currency, the somoni, the IMF's representative in Tajikistan told
Interfax.
The IMF thinks this is an important step towards macroeconomic
stability, and will help the country make a faster transition to a
market economy, he said.
The introduction of the new currency is a technical operation that
will not harm the population and will ease payments and operations in
the national currency, he said.
The new currency will be exchanged for old notes over five months
beginning October 30. The somoni will consist of 100 dinars, and be
equivalent in value to the current local currency, the Tajik ruble.
