Clashes between Taliban, Northern Alliance registered on Tajik border
DUSHANBE. May 1 (Interfax) - Russian border patrols registered new
clashes between the Northern Alliance and Taliban movement throughout
the day on Monday on the southern section of the Tajik-Afghan border.
The press service of the Russian border force in Tajikistan told
Interfax on Tuesday that hostilities involving small arms and artillery
took place in Afghan territory merely 500 meters off the borderline on
the Pyandzh border section (150 kilometers south of Dushanbe). Fighting
was especially fierce near the river port of Sherkhan.
At 9:45 p.m. three gunmen were noticed crossing the Pyandzh river
on a rubber boat from Afghan territory. When border guards tried to
stop them, the gunmen opened fire and were destroyed by reply fire.
There were no losses among Russian border guards.
The search in the incident zone resumed after dawn on Tuesday.
