MOSCOW TRYING TO CURB RISING TENSION IN AFGHANISTAN - IVANOV
MOSCOW. Sept 27 (Interfax) - Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov
has said that a political dialogue under the aegis of the UN is needed
to stabilize the situation in Afghanistan.
Russia is closely following developments in Afghanistan, Ivanov
told the press in Moscow on Wednesday. "We cannot remain indifferent to
the fact that the Taliban has put its stake on the use of force," he
said. "The conflict in Afghanistan affords no military solution. A
political dialogue under the UN's aegis between different forces is
needed."
He also said that Russia is making efforts in various directions,
including in the UN and along bilateral channels, in order "to check the
escalation of tensions in Afghanistan and not to allow the conflict to
spill beyond the Afghan borders."
Ivanov did not confirm reports that Afghan President Burhanuddin
Rabbani is in Moscow. "I have no such information," he said.
