Turkmenistan to increase gas supplies to Iran "significantly"
Text of report by Russian news agency ITAR-TASS
Asgabat, 18 November. The development has started of Turkmenistan's
largest oil and gas deposit, Korpeje, in the country's southwestern
areas. The drilling of boreholes is being carried out by the alliance of
Turkish-American companies, Calik Energy and Parker Drilling, under a
contract concluded with the Turkmenneft [Turkmen Oil] state concern.
This is intended to increase significantly fuel exports to Iran, limited
volumes of which have already been exported to this country for the last
four years.
A source at Turkmenneft told to ITAR-TASS today that four 4,000-metre
boreholes are to be drilled this year. Altogether, 30 commercial and
exploratory boreholes will be drilled and the cost of services equals
240m dollars. The project, to be accomplished within three years, is to
be financed by the Turkmenneft state concern via the State Fund of
Turkmenistan for the support of the oil and gas and mineral resources
industry with the use of revenues from oil sales.
Parker Drilling is the first US company to get involved in
Turkmenistan's fuel sector since ExxonMobil quit in 2001.
