CENTRAL ASIAN LEADERS ALARMED BY INADEQUATE INTERNATIONAL INVOLVEMENT IN
REGIONAL CONFLICTS

ALMATY. April 28 (Interfax-Kazakhstan) - The presidents of
Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Georgia and the prime minister of Azerbaijan
speaking at the Eurasian economic summit in Almaty on Thursday expressed
concern about "the inadequate involvement" of international
organizations in preventing and eliminating regional conflicts.

Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze said that international
organizations, primarily European, should have their say in the final
settlement of the Abkhazian-Georgian conflict.
Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev said that the main purpose of
all young nations is to preserve their sovereignty and territorial
integrity. He criticized international institutions, in particular the
United Nations and the OSCE trying to increase their presence in Central
Asia, for remaining indifferent to the settlement of the Afghan problem.
He said Afghanistan poses "an actual threat to peace and security" not
only in Central Asia but in Europe.
Azerbaijani Prime Minister Artur Rasi-zade agreed with the two
presidents adding that industrialized countries which he did not name
apply double standards in their foreign policy when it comes to
resolving international security problems.
