KYRGYZSTAN PREPARES FOR REBEL INVASION FROM TAJIKISTAN
BISHKEK. Aug 8 (Interfax) - All power structures in the south of
Kyrgyzstan have been called for combat preparedness #1 due to the
military operations in Uzbekistan.
All the frontier posts at the Kyrgyz-Uzbek and Kyrgyz-Tajik borders
have been alerted, sources in the republic's power structures have told
Interfax. In addition, double strengthening of militia posts in regions
bordering Tajikistan and Uzbekistan is in process. Special battalions
are being moved from the north to the south of Kyrgyzstan.
According to the Kyrgyz power structures, a detachment headed by
Dzhuma Namangani (one of the leaders of the Uzbek Islamic movement) has
become active in the Leninabad region of Tajikistan (close to
Kyrgyzstan). In particular, up to forty of his fighters are already
operating in the region bordering Kyrgyzstan. They have taken four
people hostage on Tajik territory. The Kyrgyz military do not rule out
the possibility that Namangani's fighters may try to get into
Kyrgyzstan
