RUSSIAN, TAJIK PRESIDENTS DISCUSS SITUATION IN CENTRAL ASIA

DUSHANBE. Aug 16 (Interfax) - Russian President Vladimir Putin and
Tajik President Emomali Rakhmonov agreed in Sochi on Wednesday that
Russia and Tajikistan will coordinate actions with the Central Asian
states and take measures to thwart the plans of religious extremists,
Rakhmonov's spokesman Zafar Saidov has told Interfax.
The leaders of the two states are spending their vacations in Sochi.
Putin and Rakhmonov discussed the situation in Central Asia, as well as
attempts by rebels from the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan to upset
stability in the districts of Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan bordering on
Tajikistan.
Saidov said that as signatories to the current bilateral and
multilateral agreements between countries of the Commonwealth of
Independent States, as well as to the Collective Security Treaty, the
Russian and Tajik presidents had "reaffirmed their readiness to
cooperate and coordinate their efforts with the Central Asian states,
and take additional measures to foil the plans of religious extremists,
terrorists and bandits."
The Tajik and Russian leaders also discussed the implementation of
earlier signed agreements on bilateral cooperation and exchanged views
on preparations for the upcoming CIS summit in the Crimea.
