CENTRAL ASIAN LEADERS URGE RUSSIA TO JOIN THEIR ANTI-TERRORISM TREATY
BISHKEK. Aug 21 (Interfax) - The presidents of Kazakhstan,
Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan have urged Russia to join their
treaty on combating terrorism, political and religious extremism,
transnational organized crime and other security and stability threats.
The call was made at a Sunday meeting in Bishkek between Kazakh
President Nursultan Nazarbayev, Kyrgyz President Askar Akayev, Tajik
President Emomali Rakhmonov, Uzbek President Islam Karimov and Russian
presidential envoy Sergei Ivanov.
"Russia, as a great power, may become the main force in forming a
system of stability and security in Central Asia," Akayev said.
The statement approved by the four presidents and the Russian envoy
on Sunday speaks for additional measures to strengthen the Tajik- Afghan
border as the southern frontier of the CIS.
