BROTHERS OF OPPOSITION MEMBER IN EXILE REPORTED ARRESTED IN UZBEKISTAN
20 August, 2000.
On August 18, Friday, Uzbek authorities reportedly arrested Mannon and
Husniddin Hamroev in Zarafshon/Ghijduvon region of Navoi oblast. They are
older and younger brothers of Bahrom Hamroev, head of Zarafshon branch of
banned Birlik (Unity) opposition movement, who has lived in exile in Moscow
since December 1992.
According to information received by the Union of Councils' Central Asian
Human Rights Information Network, Mannon Hamroev (born in 1961), who was an
officer at the Zarafshon labor camp, was dismissed from his position the
same day. Husniddin Hamroev (born in 1976) was unemployed.
Farmon, another brother of Bahrom Hamroev, twice visited his brother in
Moscow in February-March and June. After returning to Uzbekistan, he was
detained at home by police, his home also was searched. Authorities
suspected that Farmon brought into Uzbekistan dozens copies of the Harakat
journal, the only Uzbek opposition journal, which is published in exile by
Birlik movement. Farmon (born in 1968) until recently was a head of
sanitary-epidemiological station in Ghijduvon. He was released in 4 days
and later, in late July, he left to Moscow.
Mardon Hamroev, father of Mannon, Bahrom, Frmon and Husniddin, threatened by
authorities that his two sons would be imprisoned, if Farmon does not return
to Uzbekistan.
