UZBEK DEFENSE MINISTER DISMISSED. President Islam Karimov on
29 September fired Lieutenant General Yurii Agzamov as
defense minister, a post to which he had been appointed in
February (see "RFE/RL Newsline," 15 February 2000). No reason
was cited for his dismissal. Karimov simultaneously appointed
as Agzamov's successor his deputy, Major General Kodir
Gulomov, who also held the post of head of Uzbekistan's armed
forces academy. LF
