UZBEKISTAN, TURKEY, TO JOIN FORCES AGAINST TERRORISM, CRIME

     TASHKENT. Oct 16 (Interfax) - The presidents of Uzbekistan and
Turkey, Islam Karimov and Ahmet Sezer, pledged on Monday to join forces
in combating terrorism, drug trafficking and organized crime.
     Sezer, who arrived in Tashkent on Monday for his first official
visit to Uzbekistan, and Karimov had a face-to-face meeting and were
then joined by Uzbek and Turkish officials, after which a number of
documents were signed.
     Uzbek Defense Minister Kadyr Gulyamov and Turkish general staff
official Lt. Gen. Unal Onsipahioglu signed a military cooperation
agreement.
     At the subsequent news conference, Karimov and Sezer both expressed
their satisfaction with the results of the talks.
     Karimov said security issues had received special attention. He
said the two countries hold similar positions on many issues. He also
said that Turkey is not only prepared to give political support to Uzbek
efforts against extremism and terrorism, but is also willing to supply
Uzbekistan with military technology.
