KYRGYZSTAN CELEBRATES VICTORY OVER ISLAMISTS
Kyrgyz President Akaev and Defense Minister Esen Topoev attended a
victory parade in Bishkek on 26 October to mark the
successful expulsion from the country of groups of Islamist
militants who invaded Kyrgyzstan from neighboring Tajikistan
in August and September, RFE/RL's Bishkek bureau reported.
Akaev announced that he will donate some $20,000 of a Russian
peace prize he was awarded two days earlier to the families
of the 34 Kyrgyz troops killed during the fighting. LF
