ANTI-TALIBAN COALITION PLANNING TO STORM STRATEGIC CITY IN NORTH
AFGHANISTAN

MOSCOW. Nov 1 (Interfax) - The anti-Taliban coalition is preparing
to storm the strategic city of Taloqan in north Afghanistan, first
secretary of the Afghan embassy in Moscow Sakhi Gayrat told Interfax on
Wednesday.
The Taliban captured Taloqan along with other areas in north
Afghanistan during the summer offensive.
The embassy reports that the anti-Taliban coalition has launched a
counteroffensive and freed many important places, such as the Kunduz and
Hajagar provinces and the river port of Sherkhan.
"Over the past few days, the Taliban launched numerous offensives
against the Northern Alliance's positions but all these attempts
failed," Gayrat said. "The Taliban movement failed to intercept the
military initiative," he said.
The Taliban controls some 90% of Afghan territory, including the
capital Kabul, but is not recognized by the international community.
