RUSSIANS SAY TALIBAN FIRES AT TAJIKISTAN BORDER GUARDS

DUSHANBE. Nov 13 (Interfax) - A Russian military source said on
Monday that Taliban mortar shells that fell on Tajikistan territory on
Friday had been aimed at one of the Russian units guarding the Tajik
border.
The source told Interfax the shells had landed in a small area near
the Togul border-guard post, 150 kilometers south of Dushanbe, and that
this suggested the fire had been aimed at the guards.
Taliban mortars also attacked an Afghan refugee camp on islands
along the border river Pyandzh. Shells exploded inside the camp, burning
down several tents, the border guards said. The refugees left the camp
during the attack.
The Russian border-guard press service in Tajikistan told Interfax
that on Sunday the Afghan territory opposite the Togul post was the
scene of clashes between Taliban and anti-Taliban forces.
The situation on the border was on the whole quiet.
Refugees camping on the Pyandzh islands had made no attempts to
approach the border.
