Kyrgyzstan: President signs off on firing prosecutor
The vast majority of deputies in parliament backed Indira Joldubayeva's ouster.
In a widely anticipated move, the president of Kyrgyzstan has signed off on the firing of the General Prosecutor.
The presidential order to dismiss Indira Joldubayeva on April 13 was made possible by a resounding vote in parliament earlier in the week. A total of 105 deputies in the 120-seat legislature voted for Joldubayeva’s ouster.
This development is widely being interpreted as a slight by President Sooronbai Jeenbekov against his predecessor and ostensible ally, Almazbek Atambayev. Jeenbekov, who was sworn into office in November, is seen as wishing to establish his own power base and thus installing his own loyalists in key positions.
Before Joldubayeva, it was the turn of the head of the State Committee for National Security, or GKNB, and two of his deputies, all of them Atambayev cronies, to get the sack.
In another high-level personnel change on April 13, Jeenbekov accepted the resignation of deputy Prime Minister Askarbek Shadiyev, who is facing potential corruption charges. Shadiyev was questioned by the GKNB on March 22 as part of investigations into the embezzlement of government funds.
Since tendering his resignation, Shadiyev has been admitted to a cardiological ward at a hospital in Bishkek. 24.kg news agency cited sources as saying that the former deputy prime minister’s ward has been placed under guard.
